Create a project
Create a project to hold your application's traces, evals, and rules, then open it to see its activity.
Prerequisites
- You need resource admin permission. Without it, the Create new project button doesn't appear. For details, see Project permissions.
Create a project in the UI
- Go to the Projects page.
- Select Create new project.
If you don't have any projects yet, Create new project also appears in the middle of the page.
- For Project name, enter a name for the project, for example
checkout-agent. - For Description, enter what the project traces. This field is optional.
- Select Create.
While AIO creates the project, the button reads Creating….
Some fields on the form are fixed in this release:
- Tags is turned off and marked as coming soon.
- Retention (days) shows
60and can't be changed. For details, see Data retention. - Storage shows Acceldata-hosted, which means Acceldata stores and manages the project's traces.
To leave without creating a project, select Cancel.
Copy the connection info
After you create the project, the form is replaced by Connection info. It shows the details your application needs to send traces to this project:
- Endpoint: the address your application sends traces to.
- Project ID: the ID that identifies this project.
Select Copy next to a value to copy it. AIO doesn't show a confirmation after you copy.
The panel also says that access and secret keys aren't available for this project. To get a key, select Set up credentials. For details, see Create an API key.
Select Done to go back to the Projects page.
To find the connection info later, go to the Projects page and select the connection icon in the project's row. On the Connection info page, select Back to projects when you're done.
Choose a project name
Keep these rules in mind when you name a project:
- The name is required. AIO removes spaces from the start and end of the name.
- The name must be unique in your tenant.
- Names that start with
acceldata/are reserved. - AIO makes a readable key for the project's URL from the name. If you rename the project later, the URL key stays the same.
Open a project
- Go to the Projects page.
- Optionally, in Search by name, enter part of the project name to filter the list.
- Select the project name.
The project opens on its Overview tab. It also has Sessions, Traces, Spans, and Rules tabs. Rules appears only if you have permission to view the project.
Use Time to choose the window that the figures cover. To learn how to read traces and sessions, see Explore traces.
Create a project with the Python SDK
When you start the Python SDK with project_name, it looks for a project with that exact name, case included. If none exists, the SDK creates it with the description "Auto created by SDK" and the same fixed retention and storage as the UI.
The key you pass must have resource admin permission for the SDK to create a project. To install the SDK and find your tenant ID, see Instrument your code.
import acceldata_aio_tracer
started = acceldata_aio_tracer.init(
project_name="checkout-agent",
tenant_id="your-tenant-id",
endpoint="https://aio.example.com/aio",
access_key="YOUR_ACCESS_KEY",
secret_key="YOUR_SECRET_KEY",
)
print("Telemetry running:", started)
Replace these values:
project_name: the name of the project to use or create.tenant_id: your tenant ID.endpoint: the Endpoint value from Connection info.access_keyandsecret_key: your API key pair. For details, see Create an API key.
init returns True when telemetry is running. If you already have the Project ID, pass project_id instead of project_name. Pass one or the other, not both.
Troubleshooting
The form shows "Project name is required." Enter a name in Project name. A name made only of spaces counts as blank.
An error banner appears after you select Create. The banner shows the reason AIO gives, for example "Project names under acceldata/ are reserved". If AIO gives no reason, the banner reads "The project was not created — the server returned 500." or "The project was not created — the server did not respond." Check the reason, fix the form, and select Create again.
You don't see Create new project. You need resource admin permission. If you open the Create project page without it, AIO sends you back to the Projects page. Ask an admin for access, or see Project permissions.
The SDK doesn't send telemetry. When the SDK can't find or create the project, init returns False and logs a message such as "aio: project resolution failed (failed to create project: HTTP 403); continuing without telemetry". Your application keeps running. A 403 means the key doesn't have permission to create projects. Create the project in the UI first, or use a key with resource admin permission.
