Configure JMX for Ranger and Ranger KMS Services in Cluster
This page describes how to enable Java Management Extensions (JMX) for Apache Ranger and Ranger KMS services. Enabling JMX allows Pulse to collect real-time metrics and improve service observability.
Why enable JMX for Ranger and Ranger KMS?
JMX exposes runtime data, such as CPU usage, memory consumption, thread activity, and service statistics.
- Monitor Ranger and Ranger KMS JMX metrics to track performance and health.
- Integrate Pulse with Ranger JMX to ensure reliability and faster root cause analysis.
Supported Authentication Options
You can enable JMX with:
- No authentication – Simplest setup, suitable for non-production or trusted environments.
- Basic authentication – Adds username and password protection.
- Basic authentication with SSL – Adds encrypted communication for secure environments.

Configuration in Pulse
In Pulse, by default, Ranger and Ranger KMS enable JMX when the services are installed. To configure JMX with basic authentication or SSL for Pulse, see Configure RMI JMX for Hadoop Services in Pulse.
