Enable Developer/Advanced Mode in ChatGPT
To connect custom MCP tools or apps, you must first enable Developer Mode (also known as Connectors / Advanced Tools) in ChatGPT.
- Open ChatGPT
- Click your User Icon in the bottom-left corner
- Go to Settings
- Open Connectors / Advanced Settings
- Turn Developer Mode ON
This enables registration of custom connectors or MCP servers.
Register an MCP Server in ChatGPT
Once your MCP server is up and running:
- Go to ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors
- Click Create New
- Select Custom Connector / MCP Server
Connector Configuration
Fill in the following details:
- Name: Example:
Pulse Docs - Description: Short description of what the connector does
- MCP Server URL: Enter one MCP server URL per connector. Choose the appropriate URL based on the product:
A single connector supports only one MCP Server URL. To use ADOC, Pulse, and ODP, create separate connectors, one for each MCP server.
- OAuth Settings (if required): Configure only if your MCP server requires authentication
- Trust the Connector: Mark the connector as Trusted (custom connectors are not verified by default)
Add the App in ChatGPT
After the connector is created:
- In the ChatGPT search bar, click ➕
- Select … More → Explore Apps
- Choose the app (for example, Pulse Docs)
You will be redirected back to the search bar.
- Search for the required details and start interacting with the app.
What This Enables
After registration, ChatGPT treats your MCP server like a native app:
- Can call MCP tools directly
- Can render UI components inside the chat
- Can interact with users in real time
- Supports richer, tool-driven workflows
