Impala Fails to Start Due to a JAVA_HOME Mismatch

Issue

Impala fails to start and displays the following error:

F1016 04:28:39.485502 1326170 catalog.cc:86] UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/apache/hadoop/hive/conf/HiveConf has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 61.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 55.0 . Impalad exiting.

Cause

This issue occurs because Impala uses Java 11, but the Hive class was compiled using Java 17.

Resolution

  1. Open the /etc/default/bigtop-utils file and set JAVA_HOME to the Java 17 installation path:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-17-openjdk-amd64

  1. If stale JAR files exist in /var/lib/impala, run the following commands to back up the existing directory and create a new directory:


mv /var/lib/impala /var/lib/impala-backup

mkdir /var/lib/impala
chown impala:impala /var/lib/impala

Info: Ensure that the backup directory is retained before proceeding. The Java installation path might vary depending on the operating system.

  1. Restart Impala and verify that the service starts successfully.

Pinot Fails to Start Due to a JAVA_HOME Mismatch

Issue

Pinot fails to start and displays the following error:

Oct 16 05:57:39 ub20odp343 start-pinot-controller.sh[1393626]:

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/apache/pinot/tools/admin/PinotAdministrator has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 61.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 55.0

Cause

This issue occurs because the Pinot class was compiled using Java 17, but the configured Java runtime supports only Java 11.

Resolution

  1. Open the /etc/sysconfig/pinot-controller file and set JAVA_HOME to the Java 17 installation path:


# Java home path

  1. JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-17-openjdk-amd64
  1. Restart the Pinot Controller service and verify that it starts successfully.
    Note: The Java installation path and service configuration file location might vary depending on the operating system.

Airflow pre-requisites on Ubuntu20 + Python3.12 Environment

On Airflow service nodes on ubuntu-20 + Python3.12 environment, please execute below


apt install -y python3.12-dev libmysqlclient-dev pkg-config build-essential
